There is a free downloadable Web Seminar called Understanding Spatial Statistics in ArcGIS 9 available through the ESRI Virtual Campus. http://campus.esri.com/acb2000/showdetl.cfm?did=6&Product_id=852&CFID=20669248&CFTOKEN=51971707 The WebSeminar lasts about an hour. The slides refer to a variety of different applications, though the demos focus exclusively on crime analysis. Much archaeological data can be thought of as analogous to crime point patterns. You probably have to register with the Virtual Campus (http://campus.esri.com/), but you won’t be charged anything for the download. There is also a 5 minute video showing hot spot analysis used for 911 emergency call data (select “Using Spatial Statistics”): http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcinfo/about/demos.html In addition, The ESRI Guide to GIS Analysis, Volume *2*, has chapters corresponding to each toolset in the Spatial Statistics Toolbox. http://gis.esri.com/esripress/display/index.cfm?fuseaction=display&websiteID=86&moduleID=0 These tools are available in ArcView 9 at no extra cost.
