I'm now scoping the process to allow external data to be referenced and plotted on the UK Archaeology Map. The only agreed standard that I know of to do this in the UK is the MIDAS XML schema. So the big question... Does anyone know of a source for this information? Where do I get hold of an external source of archaeological data that uses the MIDAS XML standard? It seems to me that integrating this data into my system is the easy part - the hard part is actually finding a source of data. Is there an area I've missed? I've looked into ADS and Canmore and other places but it doesn't look like any exports of data are possible. If you don't know of a source it would be great if you can give me a contact that I can approach for this. Much appreciated.

Steve I don't know if this is any use to you but if you put 'midas xml format' into Google it comes up with some XML examples. If you put in 'midas xml format morda' it will come up with the listed building XML which I first stumbled on when I was searching for information on Morda Hall - Part of the old Oswestry Workhouse. I was able to convert it to text and extract useful information but it would be good to do it via a browser interface like Google maps.

That's a great tip thanks. That's thrown up some good examples I can use. It already looks like some don't get through my parsing, so that's a good thing to attack. Have you tried any MIDAS XML in my GMaps application? If not, go here: http://www.online-archaeology.co.uk/GoogleMap/ - click 'External' - copy & paste the URL of the XML into the bottom textbox - click 'Load MIDAS XML' The examples on the heritage standards worked without any problem, so it's interesting to get some that fail on something.

For example, using this doc: http://www.stylusstudio.com/SSDN/upload/Listed.xml The parser fails on: 'Error: oApp.childNodes.firstChild has no properties' That happens after roughly 10 monuments have been successfully loaded, so I suspect the XML is not well-formed. I'll check this one out. Also, this one: http://heritage-standards.org/midas/examples/monument_LBS_example.xml The parser also fails on: 'Error: oApp.childNodes.firstChild has no properties'

OK, I've fixed it by adding a qualifier around the attempt to get the 'Name' of the item. if(oApp.childNodes.firstChild){ oName = oApp.childNodes.firstChild.nodeValue; } There was no value in this XML tag so that's why it croaked. Both of the examples listed before now work.

Baldly, can you send me a copy of the Oswestry xml file in MIDAS format with data that you'd like to see on the map? I've downloaded this file: http://w3.oswestrybc.gov.uk/xml_engHeritage/LB_Shropshire_Oswestry.XML but it's a bit of a monster and my client side script isn't going to cope with it. I'd need to set up some server side processing for files that big.

I managed to get my initial Morda Hall info. using a text editor and pasting it into html - http://www.oswestry-history.co.uk/oswestry-W.html#workhouse I suspect this particular XML file is not meant to be permanently available and might disappear at any time, therefore I wouldn't want to include a direct link to any data in it. I might well find it useful in future to look up local Listed building info in so I thought it would be good to access the file off line. I will have a look at your Googlemaps facility.
