I used to be a member of the British Aviation Archaeological Council, although I never managed to get to a wreck recovery. I've done some general research on crashes in Scotland, though it's nowhere near being complete or comprehensive. This includes some offshore crashes as well. Anyone ever done something similar? Anyone see the Hurricane recovery from London last week? It was interesting enough, but the tv people didn't seem to realise that there wouldn't be much to see first hand. They also tried a live link to a Spitfire recovery in Germany, which fell at the first hurdle when they discovered the site was saturated with aviation fuel! The presenter there was Guy de la Bedoyere, whom I've never seen looking so uncomfortable! Anyone else see it? Regards, Gordon

Nope, didn't see that, but I always thought that Guy was a Roman expert - he must be branching out for TV.... Steve White

This is the control tower of the former Findo Gask airfield in Perthshire. When I last visited in 1993, the technical site boasted quite a few original buildings, including a rare T2 hangar. The old station HQ building had original wartime wall art on an office wall. Now the field is a construction site for luxury villas, and the only other building left is the underground battle HQ from where defence against infantry attacks would have been directed. What a waste.......... Regards,Gordon http://freewebs.com/thehistoryvault/

Just noticed that I never posted their link: www.aviationarchaeology.org.uk/. Last summer, we took the kids to Bamburgh Castle, and as well as the Mediaeval and Saxon stuff, they've also got an aviation museum there. The castle was owned by Lord Armstrong, of engineering fame, so there are lots of crash relics and models of Armstrong-Whitworth aircraft. Well worth a visit! Yours in History, Gordon

Still no sign of life from The Aerial Reconnaissance Archive. For those unfamiliar with the term, this is an attempt by Keele University to put all the RAF's recce pics from WW2 online, and searchable for a fee (eventually). Unfortunately, when the site opened a couple of months ago, they got six MILLION hits in the first few minutes and crashed. It's now offline until the server gets upgraded sufficiently to cope with the expected demand. As well as being a boon for WW2 buffs, the pics have archaeological significance too. Many sites in Britain recorded in the last decade were spotted from old RAF recce photos of the immediate postwar era, and RCAHMS actually printed two volumes of indices covering RAF and Luftwaffe pics of Scotland respectively. I only have the Luftwaffe volume, but the quality of pics are superb. Keep your eye out for the site getting back up and running- www.evidenceincamera.co.uk/ Regards, Gordon

Gordon - That looks like a great resource. This will deninitely go on your new Military History section I have planned for the portal. As I've said before I'll open up various sections on the portal so registered users will be able to control their own sections. This will make the portal into a group venture - something that is not centrally controlled, and will hopefully encourage others to start to get involved with the content. But that's the future....
