Can anyone help me? I remember seeing a documentary a long time ago about Wendell Philips but unfortunately can't find a reference either on the internet or books about him or his work. I understand that he had a sister Marion(?) who carried on his work. Could anyone suggest any links/books regarding him? Or perhaps put a bit more detail on the work he did. Cheers, Dr Mike Collier

He founded the American Foundation for the study of man in 1947 (I'm not sure) and led two expeditions in Yemen between 1950 and 1952. The main sites explored by the mission was Timna' and Marib (two ancient southarabian capital) and Hajar bin Humayd, a tell with a long and uninterrupted stratigraphy. If you want to read something search "W.F. Albright" or "G.W. Van Beek", two archaeologist who worked with him.

Wendell phillips said "Revolutions are not made; they come. A revolution is as natural a growth as an oak. It comes out of the past. Its foundations are laid far back." in 1852. Is this the same man, as there is an American guy from around the same time, May be the same one!

Pretty sure its not actually. The Wendell Phillips you refer to was the famous American abolitionist who died in 1884. My guy did some work out in the desert supervised by the army of that country. He died of cancer or some such disease and his sister carried on his work. These are the sketchy memories of a documentary a long time ago. Apparently he was an Indiana Jones type and the documentary showed him fast drawing with his pistols (slung gunfighter style in two hip holsters). Because of the other Phillips whom I'm sure did really good work, research on mine has come up well nigh impossible ! Dr Mike Collier
