Charlie, Here are some snaps of that stone I was telling you about.
Hi Gordon. The general outline look's as if it could be a knife of some kind. Any idea what type rock it is? Any chance of brightening the photos up...it's hard to make out much more than the outlines. I love to see the piece in more detail. Chat soon. Charlie, The flat underside has a curved line which looks like iron oxide of some description. No idea as to the type of rock though. I'll try to photograph it again outside, and see if it comes out better. Regards,Gordon http://freewebs.com/thehistoryvault/ www.photobucket.com/albums/y20/Historian

I'd love to see the iron oxide line. Very interesting indeed. Yeah, it's just a bit tough to make out the detail of the piece in the current photos. Charlie Hatchett Charlie@preclovis.com www.preclovis.com

I hope this lot are clearer- This is the "handle" end, showing one of the sharp edges along the sides. This is handle almost square in section. This is the sharp end, showing the dividing line between the facets. These were an attempt to show the iron oxide line, but it came out a strange colour. The sharp end facet again. And the edge at the other end. And another shot of the oxide. Regards,Gordon http://freewebs.com/thehistoryvault/ www.photobucket.com/albums/y20/Historian

Hi Gordon. If the rock material is chert or some comparable hard stone, then I definitely see the plausibility of this being a stone knife or blade. If it's a soft stone, like limestone, shale or some other sedimentary rock, it's very difficult to differentiate between natural fractures and man made fractures. Do you have a "rockhound" friend that might help you identify the type stone the specimen is? Charlie Hatchett Charlie@preclovis.com www.preclovis.com

I don't know any rock fiends, unfortunately, but I would describe it as a hard type. I found it just below Limestone cliffs, but it's definitely not Limestone or shale. I think it's too dark to be granite though. Regards,Gordon http://freewebs.com/thehistoryvault/ www.photobucket.com/albums/y20/Historian

Maybe one of you rockhounds could tell me the significance of a symmetrical pyrite cast. Thanks
To me it seems highly unlikely that very similar shapes and thickness of corresponding portions of each side of a pyrite concretion exist by natural processes. Once, yeah. But repetitively is hard to swallow. A center flat piece, with what appears to be adheared, similarly shaped, of equal thickness, pieces on each side is very difficult to swallow. http://cayman.globat.com/~bandstexas.com/iron%20artifact%2086.jpg http://cayman.globat.com/~bandstexas.com/iron%20artifact%2087.jpg http://cayman.globat.com/~bandstexas.com/iron%20artifact%2088.jpg http://cayman.globat.com/~bandstexas.com/iron%20artifact%2089.jpg http://cayman.globat.com/~bandstexas.com/iron%20artifact%2090.jpg http://cayman.globat.com/~bandstexas.com/iron%20artifact%2091.jpg I welcome any devil's advocates...I need to see if this hypothesis holds water. Well if it's bone the "etchings" are probably cut marks from when it was de-fleshed. Does the small hole look like it was drilled intentionaly? Is there a notch for hafting a blade?
The Hole does appear to be drilled. There's not an apparent notch for hafting. Wonder if it was just a tool in itself...maybe for digging or something? This one may be the one I pay to get C14 dated. I'm almost positive it was in situ, with one side on the bedrock and the other facing up to the overlying alluvium (i.e.- oldest strat hypothetically). Michael Oberndorf confirmed that he will be visiting the site the first weekend of June. If he makes it, he'll be the first pro to visit the site. He's currently directing a dig out in Gila National Forest in New Mexico. You still think you might be able to get away for a weekend in June? A big Texas welcome awaits if you can! I'm culling through a bunch of new finds...we had a couple thunderstorm lines blast through here two nights in a row. I'll post a few of the nicer ones. Chat soon Frank.
