I am Stevin and live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. After ten years in a semi-governmental agency as an editor, I have decided to go back to the local uni to study history and hopefully a bit of archeology after the first year too. Have had a lifelong fascination with especially the classic civilisations and biblical archeology. But I find myself reading basically anything.
Love anything to do with history, from the earliest written records to yesterday, but with a distinct interest in (again) the classics and WW2. Am reseraching the airbattle of January 11, 1944 in particular.
My biggest archeology thrill was when I visited Gortys, Crete. After visiting the church of Titus and the acropolis, and the wall with laws, I walked across the road and suddenly found myself in a completely unexcavated city. Marble pilars lying about, pieces of painted pottery everywhere. I decided to climb a hill to see what else I could see and found myself in the middle of a small Roman colloseum...Fancied myself a modern-time Schliemann...without the crude methods...
Haven't been heavily involved in archeology recently, but this site certainly rekindled the fire. I am toying with the idea of joining an aircraft recovery group in Holland. |
