Hi My names Lauretta. I'm currently in Poland and I work as an ESL teacher. I have always loved history and have been interested in archeology for a long time. I would love to get involved in a dig somewhere, but I'm not a student so I cant do it that way. I've checked some sites and I have to say, unless you work in a well paid job, even volunteering is impossible, financially for me. I earn a local wage (zloty) and let me tell you, it wont pay for a two week volunteer program without me indenturing myself for the next 5 years. Is there anyway round this. How can I get involved in something I'm seriously interested in but don't have the financial resources to back it up? Any suggestions? Lauretta

Hi Lauretta, Welcome to the forums! The Institute of Field Archaeologists run a workplace learning bursary scheme, but I'm not sure how it would affect you. You can find the site at www.archaeologists.net/ You could also try the Council for British Archaeology www.britarch.ac.uk Let us know how you get on. Ok.. I have looked at these sites and I think I have to come to some conclusions. As long as I am in a non native English speaking country it's going to be incredibly difficult to pursue my interests. So I need to explore other options. I need to look at moving to a place which facilitates me being able to do this. Maybe I need to go study...maybe do some kind of Uni/Open learning degree ...?? If you could choose where to live (I have a European passport so that would be somewhere in the UK/Ireland), what you would study (any specific courses leading to archeology (I know about history degrees of course)(be more specific), where and what would you study? Are there some better cities to look at living in for more exposure to archeology than others? Cheaper to live etc, etc..... I'm old and haven't studied for a long time.... that means a programme with mature age entry. And my original high schooling was in Australia. I know you aren't here to be my social director but someone must know more about this in the UK...and can recommend a direction to look in. I have been investigating but I'm not there and need some on the ground knowledge please. I need a new direction in my life and I need to decide if this is a viable option. I am tired of teaching people English and learning a local wage that gets me ... not very far. Sadly, I'd love to work for English Heritage or National Trust... I like history. I drove every one bammy here. Ret

Ret - It all depends on what area of archaeology you are interested in. For example, I used to live in London many years ago and wanted to study Classical Archaeology. I also wanted to escape from London. Since I was a mature student I had to do an Access course for a year while in London which then enabled me to apply for a Classical Archaeology degree in Warwick University. I was accepted and never looked back. Warwick University is actualy closer to Coventry than Warwick, and it was a great place to live for me because of its musical history (the Specials came from Coventry). So I'd say look around for the course you want to do using http://www.ucas.ac.uk and that will filter your options in terms of the location. Best of luck. Steve White
