Does anybody know of any dig opportunities in England for this summer? I would need one where they can train me as I have no experience. I want to try and get some experience before I go to university. I have found one dig with training so far but there doesn't seem to be that much information on it.

Find out what your local council unit is and ask them if they are taking volunteers. Most do. Most universities with archaeology departments run training digs over the summer and are happy to take prospective students on. Try asking the one you are applying to. Where abouts do you live? I might know of some local projects going on. Jonathon Smith http://www.geocities.com/archchaos1/index.htm

Hello Are you barely interested in digs in your country or also to international level? If you will be interested in experience outside of England, I am from Portugal and I can suggest some digs of volunteers. Bye ps: Excuses my English. I do not write very well.

I live in Wolverhampton and I am hoping to go to Birmingham university. I know the univeristy have a society but I didn't think I could join so I have joined the other Birmingham archaeological society except I don't think they have anything planned. I would love to go on a dig abroad but I know for a fact my mom wouldn't let me go. Thank you by the way :)

Hi! It all depends on how much (if anything!) yo want to pay! For directory of oppurtunities try this link to the current archaeology list: http://www.archaeology.co.uk/directory/results.asp?cat=1# For formalised training you probably have to pay (through the teeth). Other projects will take you on for free but may lack formal training for example the south cadbury environs project (link below) http://web.arch.ox.ac.uk/scep/login.php Good luck!

Pay?! In England we have to pay for be able to participate in an excavation? So, a person is going to work and still should pay?! Oh, I never thought that went like this! In Portugal, we do not pay for participate in the excavations, and we have right to lodging and free meals! Well, that world so different! Good Luck!

Yeah, I don't mind paying but within reason as I'm not from the most well off family. I have been looking on that webpage for a couple of months to book for this year but they haven't updated it yet. It is all digs for last year. I have emailed them to see if they are going to update it but I haven't had a reply from them yet. That last link looks interesting. Thank you everyone for your help. I just want to try and get as much experience as I can. I really want to go on this one dig on the winchester roman road but it is quite a while away from me. Plus my mom is making me organise everything so I will have to sort the hotel out and everything and to be honest I don't really know where the place is so I don't know what hotels to look at. My mom wont drive far as well so I have to find a way of getting there. She is being very awkward but I can't go on my own anyway.

By the way I am only 16 so that's why I can't go on my own. I wish I could drive but I'm one of the younger ones in my year so I have got to wait ages before I can even start my lessons yet.

i have done quiet a few training digs over the years and to be honest for learning ,the best one i found was reading uni's dig at silchester(callava atrebatem) the supervision is exellent and you get a good basic training on most archaeological methods, the camping is fun and the social side very good, gerry

Shouldn't be, digs may say 'book early', but I know from experience that most things only get finalised the night before the dig starts! Jonathon Smith http://www.geocities.com/archchaos1/index.htm

The York Archaeological Trust is organising it. They did one at St Mary's Abbey Precinct last year.
