Probably ritual...as that seems to hide a multitude of sins! Regards,Gordon http://freewebs.com/thehistoryvault/

Regards,Gordon. That's an odd way to begin a thread? In mid/conversation? I'm intrigued. Ritual...I like it. I never claimed that I could walk on water...

Thought something like that may've occured, heh. But,freestanding...in of itself. I liked your opener:
quote:
Probably ritual...as that seems to hide a multitude of sins!
I agree.Ritual, indeed may be suspect in the 'occultation of,umm,err...transgressions'. But what would your opinion be on: Ritual being reason? By this I mean 'ritualism' itself, and its role in design and layout? When a new structure or complex is discovered, analysed and in context mapped. Does rituallity present an avenue to persue as an aide or a tool? Even a humble village.... Do Common characteristics reveal themselves? Out of necessity, the fact that public displays of ritual are planned may/probably influence the physical situation of urbanity. Potsherds differ from the drama of a culture. One is all the more tangible as utility the difference,a stage for heirophants. .................................. http://apocalypto.movies.go.com/ I never claimed that I could walk on water...

I think "ritual" is the archaeologists' carte blanche when they can't think of any other logical explanantion of something. Yes, ancient people's lives revolved around worship and routine, but it's conceivable that they may just have built something for another reason, if only once in a while. I don't think tribal leaders were any less vain than their modern counterparts! Regards,Gordon http://freewebs.com/thehistoryvault/ www.photobucket.com/albums/y20/Historian

Agreed. In light of your response,on your general rationale. But,is that... vanity or virtue,on part of current expertise,in assessing mundane data? The keythought approaches the broadstroke of diffuse tenured archaeologists and their veiled dogmatism that is often evident? I myself will upfront and center, admit bias in an undefined but, curiously viable strain. What is at the heart of this parlaiance,is manifestation of ritual...by design.irrespective of culture. I never claimed that I could walk on water...

Well, if you mean "is it modern or historical vanity"-I think a bit of both! Regards,Gordon http://freewebs.com/thehistoryvault/ www.photobucket.com/albums/y20/Historian
