Flintknapping Workshop with Tim Dillard, June 4-8, 2007
The Center for American Archaeology in Kampsville, Illinois is pleased to offer a week-long, hands-on workshop in traditional flaked-stone tool technology as a part of their summer calendar in 2007. Tim Dillard, an unbelievable flintknapper with almost thirty years of experience, will lead the course. He is one of the best traditional flintknappers in the world and a fabulous teacher. Informal lectures on tool forms, chert, quarrying strategies, heat-treatment, local geology, and technical aspects of knapping will set the stage for work sessions in hammerstone percussion, antler billet percussion (no one does it better), and pressure-flaking techniques. Chert collection trips and heat-treating sessions are also a part of the week’s activities. Experienced and novice flintknappers alike will benefit from this workshop.
If you are interested in learning the strategies and techniques used by prehistoric peoples to create their tools, this is the class for you. If you are using flintknapping in experimental archaeology, this is an excellent opportunity to learn from someone who can teach all the needed skills.
The Center for American Archaeology is located in the Great American Bottom on the Illinois River near the famous Koster Archaeological Site. There is always a lot of activity at the Center with visiting scholars, summer interns from several anthropology graduate programs, and on-going field classes and activities for children and adults.
Tuition for the flintknapping class is $500.00 for the week (5 days) and includes room, a complimentary basic field lunch each day, and instruction. Breakfast and dinner are not provided but participants have access to refrigerators, microwave ovens, hot plates, and kitchen sinks to store and prepare food. Participants stay at one of the CAA’s bunk-house style dormitories while in residence; rooms are, at minimum, double occupancy. Flintknappers may bring their own tools, otherwise tools are provided.
Participants are responsible for making their own transportation arrangements; CAA can provide shuttle service to and from Lambert-St. Louis International Airport or the Alton, Illinois Amtrak station for a fee ($40.00 round trip; see Registration Form).
Forms can be found at the Center for American Archaeology (CAA) Web Site. Complete the Registration Form and return it to the CAA Office along with a 30% ($150.00) deposit or full payment if you wish to attend. Upon receipt of a completed Registration Form, a confirmation letter and a packet of additional information will be sent to you. A course syllabus will be provided upon your arrival. Please note that the remaining tuition balance is due one week before the program begins. You will also need to complete the Adult Medical Form and the Assumption of Risk/Permission to Photograph Form. These are available in PDF format from the “Registration Packet” link on the CAA main web page at http://www.caa-archeology.org/.
NOTE: Registration for the program closes one week prior to the start of the session. This program is limited to 12 individuals.
