It wont be too long before I will have to start making a decision about which course I am going to apply for at university and I am really stuck between two courses. I really want to study archaeology and ancient history together but I fear that if I do that course then I wont have enough experience to become an archaeologist. I want to do archaeology in as much detail as I possibly can but I also want study ancient history and learn some ancient languages. Has anybody got any suggestions? By the way, I am almost positive that I want to go to Birmingham University to study my degree so those are the courses I am choosing between. http://www.iaa.bham.ac.uk/ugdegprogs/progdetails/archyr1.htm http://www.iaa.bham.ac.uk/ugdegprogs/progdetails/aah.htm

Nefertems, How about doing a history course, then doing an M.Phil in Archaeology? I'm doing an MA in Mediaeval History at Glasgow. Bear in mind that an MA from one of the older Scottish unis is probably the equivalent of BA Hons. in England. I did one module in archaeology in first year, but although I've never actually been on a dig, I have enough experience through the Defence of Britain Project and studying military defences privately to qualify as an affiliate of the IFA. After graduation, I hope to do an M. Phil in Archaeology purely for the sake of it. Have you thought of something similar? Go ahead and do the dual course, an archaeology degree teachs you almost nothing about being an archaeologist. Just go on a few digs in the summer and you will learn more in two weeks than you can in 3 years of lectures. And if you want to go down the acaedemic side of archaeology then a grounding in history will be a very useful skill, very few single honors archaeology courses teach you how to evaluate the written source as well as the material Jonathon Smith http://www.geocities.com/archchaos1/index.htm
