| | 25 Apr 2008 09:00 PM | | After 5 years work in the field and 2 years involvement with GIS Urban Archaeology Databases, why is it so hard to find a job? Is there a hidden website somewhere with all the jobs??? If you can help, please do! | | | |

Its daft, i have the skills and experience to get a good job, but no one wants me! Thank you for your suggestions, i did apply to Isle of Wight, probably along with the other 100 people who read the link .

| | 01 Oct 2005 01:41 PM | | | Hello again
Long time still no job, although i did give in and stopped looking for a while. It seems to me that at last count over 320 people had read this discussion strand and a high proportion had also clicked to read the discussion about MapInfo or MapPoint. This suggests there are lots of people who are interested in GIS and archaeology. Does anyone reading this wish to discuss the lack of relationship between GIS and archaeology? Or maybe someone reading has a bit of good advice. Please jot down your thoughts.

Please count me as a yes dianah. Might I suggest you start another thread to add comments too. I'm not sure what you mean by "lack of relationship"

By 'lack of relationship' i meant that the use of GIS is growing in other industries, for example, Local Government now recognises the benefits of GIS for land and property portfolios and gazetteers and even crime analysis. The emergency services, should also find huge benefits in the NLPG. MY problem is that a few Urban Archaeology Databases exist, but the archaeological world is not using GIS to its full potential. If used correctly and updated/ developed it can be a fantastic tool. Is this what you were agreeing to? I will happily add more comments, it is a subject very close to my heart.

The GIS Jobs title of this thread might loose some readers - why not you start another thread to carry on this discussion?

Welcome to the forums.
One of the reasons I started this portal was for this reason - apart from http://www.bajr.org the www seems pretty limited from a UK jobs perspective. I've included as much info in the portal as I can find - time permitted.
Given your experience I would mail as many people as I could to get my name around - you've probs already done this though.
The other reason is probably down to funding - isn't it always.
My advice, for what its worth, is to keep posting to these forums. Also, if you have any work you'd like to showcase, I'd be happy to include it on the portal.

| | 25 Apr 2008 09:00 PM | | Thank-you steve.
I have tried various searches via internet but GIS/Archaeology doesn't seem a skill in demand. The UAD for canterbury was a mamouth project, plotting finds and excavations through time and dating back to prehistory. It is a fascinating project and essential to planners and studants alike, but now owned by EH.
Thanks for your advice, i will keep searching for that illusive job.
