Years ago when I first managed to get a Linux running on my PC I tried in vane to run the free GIS package GRASS. Since 2005 there has been a liveCD version available which I have only just come across and downloaded. It seems to be up and running painlessly, all I need now to to understand GIS and get to grips with GRASS!! and the other GIS tools which are packaged on the CD. http://www.sourcepole.com/sources/software/gis-knoppix/index.xml

Hi Baldlygo, If your looking into GRASS GIS look at the website http://grass.itc.it/ this may be able to help you with the commands e.g. r.rast, d.rast, d.m& etc I'm still learning it. I'm taking the M.Sc. at University College London in GIS and Archaeology in which GRASS is highly used as well as ArcGIS.

Sounds interesting. Would you be up for sharing some of your data so I could try to show it as a layer on GoogleMaps?

I'd gladly do that Steve but I am still at ground zero when it comes to GIS. I would recommend that anyone interested in GIS checks the distribution out for themselves - it will probably be a long time before I could pass on any tips or data.
