Looks like Microsoft have beaten Google to this: http://mapperz.blogspot.com/2006/08/uk-geocoding-microsoft-virtual-earth.html Google have been promising to provide UK geocoding as part of the Google Maps API, but have not yet officially released anything. What's Geocoding? It means that you can search for a UK place now in Virtual Earth, either via address or Postcode and the location will be found. Anyone can use Virtual Earth to create web mapping applications. Google have released geocoding for many countries, UK being the notable exception. As soon as they do you can guarantee I'll be adding it to the UK Archaeology Map.

geocoding can be done through the google ajax api in theory you can geocode using the ajax api and map api to geocode uk addresses. though geocoding UK addresses and postcodes is breaking Ordnance Survey and Royal Mail Postcodes - Postal Address File (PAF) more here - or search the google map api discussion group for 'UK Geocoding' http://groups.google.com/group/Google-Maps-API/browse_thread/thread/c3f8b0c83e2b8c99/c0b575924349cb8d?lnk=gst&q=uk+geocoding&rnum=1#c0b575924349cb8d mapperz http://mapperz.blogspot.com x never marks the spot. x,y does

Thanks mapperz, welcome to Online Archaeology. I know there's been various methods posted to the board and I've checked out the service you posted on your blog. I could also use the Y! service because from most accounts it's an accurate service. Now it's just a matter of getting round to doing it.

mapperz - I had a sudden burst of creativity and have got geocoding working by using the Yahoo Geocode service. You can see it on the map by going here: http://www.online-archaeology.co.uk/GoogleMap/ - click on the magnifying glass icon at the top of the zoom control - enter a UK town or city like 'Coventry' and click Find - You'll go straight to the town/city and data will be loaded within the bounds The Yahoo geocoder isn't that great. I'm just using a straight freetext on the 'location' param, but it doesn't even pick up a lot of UK towns. Let me know what you think.

Google adds contours to terrain - Not perfect in places but another useful addition. http://mapperz.blogspot.com/2008/04/google-add-contours-in-terrain.html Mapperz http://mapperz.blogspot.com x never marks the spot. x,y does

Google Terrain is now available in the API http://mapperz.googlepages.com/Google_Terrain.html might be helpful to archaeologists out there. Varies in quality (Swiss Alps are very good) Mapperz http://mapperz.blogspot.com/

That is top class, thanks mapperz. Do you have a link to an official release? Is it in the live API version? Wonder if they're going to include contour lines for elevation? Steve White
