 | | 25 Apr 2008 09:01 PM | | | OK...not actually archaeological software but a free application I would hate to be without for any type of work - http://www.irfanview.com .
It is fast, small and can do all the most common imaging tasks and a lot more. | | | |

 | | 25 Apr 2008 09:01 PM | | | Well I haven't used this software - but it looks pretty useful for anyone contemplating GeoPhys.

--------------
AIS ARCHEOGRAF is an archaeological information system for archaeological sites registering, analysing and digital mapping. First af all the system has been developed to help archaeologists process archaeological data and output sites arrays to GIS.
AIS ARCHEOGRAF structure allows register and describe sites in a standalone program and output selected sites to a GIS for analising. The system includes information chapters: names, categories, administrative and geographic location, chronology, cadaster, bibliography, archive references and links to MEDIA files. Each chapter has its own descriptive algorithm.
Special efforts have been done to develope dinamic link with a GIS and configure variables for individual demands. Due to its specificity archaeological data must have spatial binding, that allows processing large amount of archaeological data with usage of digital mapping. This function is available due to known geographic coordinates of each site.
Please, visit our site and explore the program. All your comments are much welcome!
Thank you,
The Archeograf Team.

.. greetings, all..
.. it's not an archaeological program, but I zoom in to about 250 feet on any point on Earth before the images begin to distort. It's perfect for aerial surveys. I assume that the better your connection speed, the better and clearer your view will be.

.. it's the latest update for GoogleEarth, it's free and I can't recommend it highly enough..
.. the only stupid question is the one that goes unasked.. | | | |

GRASS GIS http://grass.itc.it/ A great package - it runs through cygwin (www.cygwin.com) a unix emulator for windows but they are developing a windows based version
landsurf http://www.landserf.org/ a program which open many data types - graet for hydroloic analysis and calculating slope and aspect, actually written by an archaeologist!
Paraview http://www.paraview.org/New/index.html good for visulising in 3D
hugin - http://hugin.sourceforge.net/great for creating panoramas, put this under imaging
Well thats all the 'free' software i can think of at the mo!
