After a year's research I managed to track down the family of an Italian POW who worked on my grandfather's farm in South Africa.

In 1944 he was transferred to the UK and had a son there.

I have his name, POW number and Italian force number.  Any help on how I can find the camp(s) he went to in the UK?

Hi Hennie,
Welcome to the forums.
Where was his son's birth registered? That would give you the starting point for possible camps. Unfortunately there's not a lot of official records left for individual prisoners, so it's got to be done the hard way!

Hello Gordon

I have obtained the following information from the Red Cross

"Transferred from over sea to United Kingdom, POW Camp No 17, on 7.7.1944"
"Transferred on 29.7.1944 to POW  Camp No 50"

I suspect the child must have been born somewhere around Wigan.  Where are birth records kept in the UK?  I am trying to find the child on behalf of the family.

Regards
Hennie

Hi Hennie,
That's good news. Birth records for England and Wales appear to be in Southport these days. You can contact the General Register Office here-
