WHAT LIES BENEATH: UNIQUE GEOPHYSICAL EQUIPMENT DEMONSTRATION National Trade Fair at test site on 25 May Those interested in Shallow Geophysics will have a unique opportunity not only to see a wide range of geophysical equipment but to try it out at a national trade fair at a Leicester test site on Thursday 25th May. EIGG (the Environment & Industrial Geophysics Group) will be holding its biennial exhibition at the outdoor venue, where people can see demonstrations, and operate the equipment for themselves. The trade fair is aimed at anyone involved in geophysical surveys, including people in town planning, civil engineering, utilities, hydrogeology, mining and the extractive industry, waste management, environmental assessment and archaeology. A number of students studying Earth Science and related subjects which use the techniques of near-surface geophysics are also expected to attend Equipment to be demonstrated is planned to include electromagnetic systems, ground probing radar (GPR), magnetometers, multi-sensor survey systems, resistivity imaging systems and seismographs, and related computer software for interpretation of the data. Among items available for trial are those used on the popular television programme, Time Team. Organiser of the Trade Fair, Dr Ian Hill, of the University of Leicester Department of Geology, commented: "EIGG's Geophysical Test Site is an ideal spot to hold the exhibition. Companies who make this type of equipment frequently attend indoor trade fairs where it's impossible to demonstrate their goods because there may be too much electrical noise, or too many people moving around. This exhibition is in the middle of a field where we can run all the equipment. Potential clients can get some personal instruction and then give it a trial." The EIGG Geophysical Equipment Exhibition will take place on Thursday 25th May between 10am and 4pm. Admission is free, coffee is available and a packed lunch can be ordered in advance. Provisional plans are for demonstrations in magnetic survey technique, radar survey technique and resistivity imaging surveys morning (10am to 12 noon) and afternoon (2-4pm), and seismic EM and gravity techniques (12 noon to 2pm) More information is available from the website http://www.le.ac.uk/geology/iah/res...006hp.html or by contacting Dr Ian Hill, Department of Geology, University of Leicester, Leicester LE1 7RH, tel 0116 252 3933, email iah@le.ac.uk
