A number of years ago I was on holiday in Scotland and picked up (what I thought) was an unusual stone. It has two sides of approx 11cm in length at 90 degress to each other, with a third side of approx 16 cm in length. Looking from the 'top' it could almost be described as a triangle (although the bottom side is a bit ragged/broken(?)). The stone tapers down from the peak to bottom side. On the face of the stome are two etched lines in the shape of a cross, i.e. one of the lines is approx 10 cm in length and is parallel to the bottom side, and the other line interects the other line at approx half way along and is approx 4 cm in length. I only thought that the stone was interesting because I thought I had seen a similar stone in a museum somewhere. So....before I add the stone the rockery....has anyone got any suggestions as to where I could try and ascertain on the web where I could try and see if this is of interest (or just another rock).

Gordon, I have taken a photo.....and this may seem a dumb question, but the forum does not allow me to attach files. How do I post the picture? Geoff

That's better, Geoff. Certainly is unusual, and the 'cross' appears to be a deliberate etching. What do others think? Where in Scotland did you find it btw? Regards,Gordon http://freewebs.com/thehistoryvault/ www.photobucket.com/albums/y20/Historian

Gordon, I've now added more pictures - different angles. I found it near a place called Balcary (near Dumfries). We went for a walk in the country and it was on the path. Regards, Geoff

See where you're coming from Geoff. Definitely an unusual shape, and to me the top of the cross seems to have a diagonal stroke leading left from its tip, almost like a figure 1 crossed out horizontally. Have you had a look on CANMORE at www.rcahms.gov.uk to see what else might be in the area? Regards,Gordon http://freewebs.com/thehistoryvault/ www.photobucket.com/albums/y20/Historian

Gordon, I've had a look at CANMORE but with no success, i.e. nothing in the immediate area and no images that resemble the stone. Thanks for the advice. Geoff
