Roman mausoleum found under refuse dump

Textiles from Peruvian cave 12000 years old

17 April 2011 Textiles found in the Guitarrero Cave, Ancash, Peru, have now been radiocarbon dated to 12,000 years aog, making them the oldest textiles ever found in South America.

The Guitarrero site is located in the province Yunghai (region Ancash), 2 km north of the town of Shupluy and 1km al west of the village of Mancos, at 9o 12 S, 77o 42 W.

The cave is 2,580 m above sea level and 50 m above the Rio Santa.

Two Roman or Saxon soldier burials found in Colchester

14 April 2011 The remains of two spearmen, laid to rest on their backs with their weapons and armour, have been discovered in a cemetery beneath the former Hyderabad Barracks.

The Colchester Archaeological Trust believes they could have been Saxon soldiers hired in the 4th or 5th century AD – the final days of the Roman empire.

Roman phallic charm pendant found in Norfolk, England

14 April 2011 A metal detectorist has found a gold pendant, in the shape of a phallus. It is believed to have been a charm to protect the wearer.

Iron Age massacre at Fin Cop, Derbyshire?

8 April 2011 The discovery of nine skeletons, all women and children, buried under a collapsed defensive wall at Fin Cop, a hillfort in Derbyshire, England, has led archaeologists to suggest there may have been a massacre.

Warrior graves 500-700AD found in Italy

7 April 2011 The bones of a soldier with leprosy who may have died in battle have been found in a medieval Italian cemetery, along with skeletons of men who survived blows to the head with battle-axes and maces. Fossil from Nichoria, Greece may have inspired Greek myths

31 March 2011 The fossilised leg bone of Pleistocene rhinoceros, found at the ancient site of Nichoria, Messinia, Greece, may have inspired the myths of the Greeks. The ancient Greeks probably discovered it in the lignite deposits near Megalopolis, Messenia. Having been lost in laboratories for a number of years, the bone has now been sent to the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England.
