Finds Liaison Assistant and Fieldwork Facilitator

A dedicated and self-motivated individual is sought to join the Heritage Conservation team to help develop the Portable Antiquities Scheme in Kent. Your primary responsibilities will be to assist the Finds Liaison Officer to carry out the objectives of the Scheme, being to advance knowledge of the history and archaeology of England and Wales by systematically recording archaeological objects found by the public; to raise awareness among the public of the educational value of archaeological finds and facilitate research in them; to increase opportunities for active public involvement in archaeology and to strengthen links between metal-detector users and archaeologists.

You will have a good degree in archaeology or a related subject, or equivalent relevant expertise. Competence in artifact identification, an awareness of the issues involving metal detecting and archaeology, the ability to collect and collate information and data and a flexible approach to working are also required (there will be some evening and weekend work), together with the ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines.

The primary role of the job is assisting with and enabling the community archaeology objectives of the Portable Antiquities Scheme. This will consist of liaison between archaeologists, museums, metal detectorists and others, and will have a promotional and educational role. A major task within the role will be the recording of archaeological objects found by members of the public, with an emphasis on finds recovered by metal detectorists.
