The Portable Antiquities Scheme is a voluntary scheme to record archaeological objects found by the public, including metal detector users. We need a dedicated, enthusiastic individual with excellent communication and organisational skills to be the Portable Antiquities Scheme Finds Liaison Officer for Northamptonshire. As a finds liaison officer, your role will be to record objects which have been found by the public and metal detector users. You will work to promote and increase active public involvement in the scheme and make the results accessible to all.
In addition to this you will provide advice and guidance on the requirements of the Treasure Act 1996, code of practice and the statutory provision relating to the use of metal detectors on scheduled sites.
You should have a flair for communicating the importance of the archaeological heritage to people from different backgrounds. Ideally you will have some experience of public outreach work in a museum or archaeological environment, as well as experience of working with metal-detector users or other voluntary groups.
A degree in archaeology or a related subject is highly desirable. You will have a background in finds identification and recording. Previous experience of computerised databases will be an advantage.

Principal responsibilities
1. To provide advice and guidance about the Portable Antiquities Scheme and its key aims to stakeholders and other relevant organisations, as well as to the public.
2. To maintain and develop relationships with metal-detector users and other finders in Northamptonshire, through personal contacts, group meetings and outreach activities where appropriate.
3. To identify and record finds using the Portable Antiquities Scheme database, to a consistent standard, photographing, scanning and drawing as necessary; and to seek advice from Finds Advisors as necessary.
4. To provide advice and guidance on the requirements of the Treasure Act 1996 and Code of Practice and the statutory provision relating to the use of metal detectors on Scheduled sites; to act as expert adviser on finds of treasure in liaison with local museums and coroners.
5. To work to promote awareness and understanding between all those who have and involvement or interest in the location and recording of portable antiquities and to seek to ensure that all recording is done in a way that meets best practice.
6. To promote the Scheme and engage in outreach activities designed to raise awareness of the importance of recording finds and the value of the information collected.
7. To report to the National Head of Portable Antiquities and to the local Northamptonshire Councils Association Heritage Sub-Group or its equivalent and other professional or local authority bodies as required, producing reports, statistics or articles as necessary.
8. Monitor project expenditure and produce reports, liaising closely with PAS national staff, partners and NCC staff to meet the Scheme’s requirements.
9. To liaise closely with Northamptonshire SMR/HER and Archives Service colleagues and contribute to joint projects that will enhance understanding of Northamptonshire’s historic environment.
10. To undertake such other reasonable duties as required by the Chair of the Northamptonshire Councils Heritage Sub-Group and/or Heritage Assets Officer.
11. To ensure that reasonable care is taken at all times for the health, safety and welfare of yourself and other persons, and to comply with the policies and procedures relating to health and safety within the Authority.
12. Demonstrate awareness/understanding of equal opportunities and other people's behaviour, physical, social and welfare needs.
13. To carry out any other duties which fall within the broad spirit, scope and purpose of this job description.
This job description reflects the major tasks to be carried out by the post holder and identifies a level of responsibility at which they will be required to work. In the interests of effective working, the major tasks may be reviewed from time to time to reflect changing needs and circumstances. Such reviews and any consequential changes will be carried out in consultation with the post holder.
Please note that the post holder will be expected to work some hours outside core time, for example in the evenings or at weekends, for which lieu time will be offered.
| IFA Workplace Learning Bursary Environmental Archaeology

Applications are invited for a Workplace Learning Bursary in Environmental Archaeology at the Historic Environment and Archaeology Service. The placement is supported by the Institute of Field Archaeologists with funding from the Hertiage Lottery Fund. This is an excellent opportunity to gain skills in environmental archaeology, working in a small team of environmental archaeologists who undertake a wide range of professional archaeological projects in Worcestershire and the wider region. The training will be focused on processing and sorting environmental samples, analysing environmental remains and enhancing comparative collections, and compiling mapped data to enhance the Historic Environment Record. The trainee will work under the supervision of Dr. Alan Clapham, environmental Archaeologist, with support from Liz Pearson and Nick Daffern of the environmental archaeology team.

Applicants should have a relevant qualification or equivalent experience in archaeology. At least 6 months experience in professional archaeology is desirable, along with demonstrable interest in an aspect of palaeo-environmental work. We seek applicants with a strong interest in environmental archaeology and who intend to pursue a career in environmental archaeology. Our aim is to undertake excellent analytical projects and to provide high-quality professional advice relating to environmental archaeology, and the placement holder will be trained and supported to deliver key aspects of this service.

The post is designed to provide the successful candidate training in the principles and practice of archive archaeology, including both objects-based and desk-based archaeological research and museums practice. During the past 20 years Oxford University has been at the forefront of the development of training in professional archaeology. The Pitt Rivers Museum is the University of Oxford’s Museum of anthropology and world archaeology. It is noted for its artefact-rich displays, its period atmosphere and for a strong research culture. The bursary holder will enhance access to and understanding of the archaeological resource of the Pitt Rivers Museum. Applications are invited for an HLF-funded IFA Workplace Learning Bursary at Cardiff University in the field of bioarchaeology under the supervision of Senior Lecturer Dr Jacqui Mulville and Research Associate, Ms Adrienne Powell. The successful candidate will also benefit from the support of previous Bursary Holder, Richard Madgwick, as ‘placement buddy’.
This is an excellent opportunity to receive training in all aspects of commercial bioarchaeology laboratory management and practise (specialising in osteoarchaeology): including contract management, publicity, time management, the curation and development of the comparative collection as well as gaining specific experience in all stages of osteological research including the evaluation, assessment, recording, analysis and the production of reports for publication. Part of this training will be focused on the assessment and analysis of the cremated remains (human and/or animal) recovered from the Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Cleatham, Lincolnshire. The successful candidate will also be trained in the role of bioarchaeologists in the field, and will be encouraged to attend an excavation. There may also be an opportunity to use the experience gained in this placement towards a vocational qualification in archaeological practice.
We welcome applicants with experience in identifying and recording osteological material, who have a relevant qualification (or equivalent experience) along with computing experience. A proven ability to complete written reports is essential. The Bursary holder will be based in the Osteoarchaeology laboratory within the School of History and Archaeology, University of Cardiff, Cardiff, Wales. A dedicated, enthusiastic individual is sought to join the Heritage Conservation group at Kent County Council to help record and protect the rich and varied historic environment of Kent. Your primary responsibility will be to oversee the Portable Antiquities Scheme, funded by DCMS. The work will involve recording new finds made by members of the public and metal-detecting groups. The successful candidate will respond to enquiries from members of the public, attend meetings of metal detecting clubs, coordinate Treasure cases, undertake relevant research projects and liaise with archaeologists, museum curators and other professionals.

Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust is a registered Scottish Charity which aims to conserve, enhance and promote the historic environment of the area (www.pkht.org.uk).
This is an excellent opportunity to gain extensive workplace training in development control archaeology and HER work. The successful candidate will gain valuable skills working on: assessing weekly planning lists for archaeological potential; screening consultations for archaeological impact; making recommendations to local authority planners; the production of Terms of Reference (TOR) documents; the provision of archaeological information and advice; monitoring archaeological field-work, post excavation work and publication with respect to TORs; HER work will include: interrogation and analysis of information held on the HER (database/GIS); weekly maintenance; and HER enhancement.
